Effective Stress

Two acrylic ‘Subsurface Soil Columns’ that are 6’ in length are constructed using various soils. Each column contains a different subsurface profile with labels for unit weight information and water table location. After introducing the concepts associated with effective stress, the students are asked to work in groups to solve effective stress example problems using these classroom models. Students need to measure the soil depths themselves, gather the unit weight information, and make the necessary total stress, pore pressure, and effective stress calculations as part of the classroom assignment.
